BRONCHITIS

Bronchitis

Bronchitis is the inflammation of the bronchial tubes, which carry air to and from the lungs. It can lead to a persistent cough, often with mucus, along with difficulty breathing, chest discomfort, and fatigue.

Types of Bronchitis

  1. Acute Bronchitis:
    • Typically caused by viral infections (like the common cold or flu).
    • Lasts for a short period, usually a few weeks.
    • Symptoms include a productive cough, fatigue, sore throat, and mild fever.
  2. Chronic Bronchitis:
    • A type of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD).
    • Often caused by long-term irritants like smoking or air pollution.
    • Characterized by a productive cough lasting at least three months over two consecutive years.

Symptoms of Bronchitis

  • Persistent cough with mucus (clear, yellow, or greenish).
  • Wheezing or shortness of breath.
  • Fatigue or general weakness.
  • Mild fever and chills.
  • Chest discomfort or tightness.

Causes of Bronchitis

  • Acute Bronchitis:
    • Viral infections
    • Bacterial infections
    • Exposure to irritants like smoke or chemicals
  • Chronic Bronchitis:
    • Smoking
    • Air pollution
    • Workplace irritants
    • Genetic factors

Diagnosis of Bronchitis

  • Medical history and physical examination
  • Chest X-rays or CT scans
  • Pulmonary function tests
  • Sputum tests to rule out infections

Treatment for Bronchitis

  • For Acute Bronchitis:
    📌 Rest and hydration
📌 Over-the-counter pain relievers (acetaminophen or ibuprofen)
    📌 Cough suppressants (if necessary)
📌 Avoid smoking or secondhand smoke
  • For Chronic Bronchitis:
    📌 Quitting smoking
📌 Bronchodilators or inhalers to open airways
    📌 Pulmonary rehabilitation programs
📌 Oxygen therapy in severe cases

Prevention of Bronchitis

  • Avoid smoking and secondhand smoke
  • Get vaccinated for flu and pneumonia
  • Wash hands regularly to prevent infections
  • Avoid exposure to air pollutants and irritants

Tip: If symptoms persist or worsen, especially with high fever or significant breathing difficulty, consult a healthcare professional promptly.
